After Meppel switched to natural gas in 1960, coal barges no longer traveled to the gasworks on the Prinsengracht. In 1967, the last section of the Prinsengracht, which was no longer economically viable, was filled in.
As part of the Prinsenbuurt redevelopment, it was decided to excavate this section of the canal again. In 2008, a pedestrian and bicycle bridge was built over this new canal and, following a citizens' competition to find a suitable name, was christened Prinsenbrug. The bridge is built in the style of the nearby Emma Brug or Tip Brug. The Prinsenbrug is the newest drawbridge in Meppel.
