Originally, the Hungerford bridge goes back to plans by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It was opened in 1845 as a pure pedestrian connection and purchased in 1859 by the South Eastern Railway, built the new station of Charing Cross on the north shore. The railway company had a new iron lattice of John Hawkshaw replace the suspension bridge, which was opened in 1864. The suspension chains were reused for the Clifton suspension bridge.
