Wikipedia:Smart Circular Bridge (SCB) is an EU-funded project to build two pedestrian and bicycle bridges made of flax fibers. The first bridge was inaugurated in Almere in 2022, and a second in Ulm in 2025. The project is being led by Eindhoven University of Technology in collaboration with 14 project partners and aims to demonstrate that it is possible to create climate-friendly, bio-based, and circular bridges. The precursor to the Smart Circular project was launched in 2016. Bridges were erected on the grounds of the Eindhoven University of Technology as part of a research project. As part of the "Smart Circular Bridge" project, funded by the EU from 2020 to 2023, locations for bridges were originally planned in the Dutch cities of Almere and Bergen op Zoom, as well as in the Netherlands. Ilsfeld was planned. Bridges were actually built in Almere and Ulm. The first Smart Circular Bridge in Almere has a span of 15 meters and contains approximately 3.2 tons of flax fibers. It was opened on April 22, 2022, at the international horticultural exhibition Floriade. A biocomposite material made of flax, special plastics, and resin results in a lightweight and stable material whose properties are comparable to those of Aluminium or Steel is comparable. The natural fibers provide strength, and the bioresin binds the fibers together.[6][7][8]Polymer takes about a day.[7]
