A Unique Structure
The bridge design was originally rejected as unfeasible in 1991. Twenty-three years later, the Aubrugg wooden bridge, based on Hermann Blumer's revised design, replaced the burned-down wooden bridge. The artfully curved new pedestrian bridge has a span of 38 meters and weighs 40 tons.
Its main structure consists of six continuous arches: a left and a right roadway arch, a left and a right compression arch, and the superimposed side arches. The upper arches absorb the compressive forces, the lower ones the tensile forces. The joints of the main arches are particularly noteworthy. Through a combination of modern timber framing techniques and sophisticated engineering, these bridges feature traditional wood-to-wood joints.
The entire supporting structure is constructed of glued laminated timber made of larch. The decking is made of oak from a local forest. A white membrane roof made of a high-tech film spans the entire bridge. All components were custom-made as individual pieces.
The bridge was built by the company Blumer Lehmann.
