The bridge, opened in 1887, was originally planned for both road and rail traffic. However, during the construction of the railway, a route closer to the sea was preferred. It had four spans of 36.6 meters each and one of 18.3 meters. The bridge was supported by cast-iron cylinders filled with concrete. Repeated flooding damaged the bridge, so that by the end, three different types of truss structures had been used.
