ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:
The Fairfield Bridge over the Waikato River is a reinforced concrete arch truss bridge. It is 139 meters long in total, with three 39-meter arches and a short land span at both ends. Piers, abutments, deck, and railings are also made of reinforced concrete. Pedestrian access is provided on the outside of the trusses on both sides of the roadway.
MODIFICATIONS:
None, although there is some cracking and wear to the concrete.
The Fairfield Bridge is a striking and elegant road bridge built over the Waikato River in 1937. A reinforced concrete arch-string design, it was constructed on the northern outskirts of Hamilton as an alternative crossing to the steel-arched Victoria Bridge in the city center.
