ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:
The Waiteti Viaduct is a four-span lattice girder viaduct, spanning 130 meters and rising 35 meters above the river level. The foundations and abutments are constructed of solid concrete, and the structure is supported by three wrought iron lattice piers. It was the second railway viaduct in New Zealand to be built of iron. The wrought iron components are riveted together to form the main bridge sections. The track and footpath run on a rolled iron aft deck.
MODIFICATIONS:
1926 – Reinforcement with slab girders replacing the end spans, each supported by a central reinforced concrete pier.
