A single-width, curved brick bridge with stone piers, a stucco facade, and a cast-iron railing. A set of wrought-iron gates with cast-iron posts is fitted at the western approach.
The Canterbury Association survey of Christchurch in 1850 laid out the emerging city on a grid, intersected only by diagonals providing access to the port of Lyttelton and the northern hinterland. However, the regularity of this street pattern was disrupted by the sweeping bends of the River Avon. These proved a serious obstacle to travel within the city and necessitated the rapid construction of a series of bridges. Initially simple structures, by the 1880s most of these inner-city bridges had been replaced with bridges made of more durable materials. With their fine cast-iron railings, they contribute greatly to the cityscape and character of Christchurch.
