Completed in 1931, the Kelburn Viaduct is a two-lane reinforced concrete girder road bridge. Designed by the engineering department of Wellington City Council, headed by the important engineer George A. Hart (1870–1948), the Kelburn Viaduct is a remarkable structure in the urban streetscape. This bridge has historical and social significance, as it was a much-anticipated modernization of the city's road infrastructure and remains a vital transport link. Plans to build a new Upland Road bridge to replace an outdated wooden bridge from the late 19th century were developed in 1929. The existing Kelburn Viaduct could not meet modern traffic demands, as it was too narrow to accommodate two lanes. The Evening Post closely followed the construction of the replacement structure, publishing photographs in most months between 1930 and 1931, indicating a high level of public interest in the project.
