The ANZAC Memorial Bridge, located south of Eketahuna in Kaiparoro alongside State Highway 2, is a unique structure in New Zealand and was designed by local civil engineer Alfred Falkner (1854–1939). The concrete arch bridge was completed in 1922, largely thanks to community effort, and its commemorative plaques were unveiled on ANZAC Day in 1923.
Kaiparoro was settled in the late 19th century by members of the Wellington Special Settlement Group. Despite railway construction in the district, the northern Wairarapa settlements developed relatively slowly due to their heavy forest cover. However, by the early 20th century, the population was well established in this agricultural and milling region, and safe and efficient road transport became a growing concern.
