The partially reconstructed suspension bridge, spanning both the north and south banks of the Māwheranui/Grey River and linking the Brunner and Tyneside industrial heritage sites, is the sixth incarnation of a bridge, first built on this site in 1876 to serve what was once New Zealand's largest coal mining area. It is significant as a key element within the Brunner Coal Mining Remains Historic Area, both visually and historically, as a link in the transport network between the mines, the railway, and Greymouth Harbour.
