This bridge spans the waters of Manado Bay and the mouth of the Tondano River, passing over the Port of Manado and the Manado Bersehati Market.
History
Construction of the Soekarno Bridge was begun in 2003 by the central government, which appointed Hutama Karya as the main contractor. Due to technical difficulties with the surrounding terrain, which required special treatment, construction of the bridge was suspended for 12 years.
At the request of President Joko Widodo, the bridge was allowed to be used by the public prior to its inauguration, and it was opened to the public on May 26, 2015, before being officially inaugurated on May 28, 2015, by the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, along with the Minister of Public Works and Housing, Basuki Hadimuljono.
Technical Construction
The Soekarno Bridge has a total length of 1,127 meters, a width of 17 meters, and a main span of 240 meters. The bridge is supported by 44 stay cables manufactured by a French company.
The road section is 6 meters wide per lane. It features a 120-meter-long cantilever bridge over the Tondano River, as well as a 253-meter-long southern approach and a 244-meter-long northern approach.
Tourism
The Soekarno Bridge has become a new landmark of the city of Manado. Many locals and tourists stop on the bridge to take photos, as the view from the top is beautiful. One can clearly see the Manado Tua archipelago, Bunaken, Mount Klabat, Mount Soputan, and the panorama of the city of Manado.
