The original Newmarket Viaduct, built between 1962 and 1966, was once New Zealand's largest prestressed concrete bridge at 689 meters and a central feature of Auckland's cityscape. Due to structural deficiencies, high maintenance costs, and insufficient earthquake resistance, this bottleneck was replaced between 2008 and 2012 in a complex four-stage plan while traffic continued to flow.
