The Customs bridge is a bridge across the Elbe in the customs in the Magdeburg district of Werder.
It is the Eastern extension of the new River Bridge, over which runs the historic and still significant Eastern arterial road from Magdeburg's old town. A little further east of customs bridge the Anna-Ebert-bridge joins, which bridged the old Elbe.
A first bridge across the Elbe in the customs at this point was in 1828. However bridges across the Elbe and their often-changing branches were in this area already for centuries.
Today's began construction work on the establishment of three arches bridge in 1879, was finished in 1882. It was massively built of bricks in cement mortar and veneered with sandstone blocks. The total length is 43.6 m, Pier thickness between 3 and 3.3 meters the clear widths of the arches measure 10, 17.50 and 10 meters. The width between the parapets is 13,54 meters. Devices were integrated in the bridge, which should allow a demolition in case of war.
The bridge was decorated with four allegorical figures created Emil Hundrieser, representing shipping, trade, industry and agriculture. Also the balustrade is a working of dog Riesers. The coat of arms of the Hanseatic cities of Magdeburg, Hamburg, Altona and Brandenburg (Havel) (North side) and Leipzig, Dresden, Prague, and Berlin (South side) were attached to the sides of the bridge piers.
The keystones inserted at the sides show mercury and Kilian in the Middle, on the sides of Naiads. Originally on the bridge on figures largely weathered after more than 100 years had to be removed. 2006/2007 new figures created according to old templates, which have found space on the bridge.
(Source: Wikipedia)
