Similar stone Werra bridge at Vacha was built until 1343, counted 17 arc at the time however. Since ancient times crossed at Creuzburg military coming from the Rhine via Kassel and trade route "the long Hesse" the Werra and ran after Thuringia. Parts of the present-day Hesse at the time belonged to the Landgraviate of Thuringia, Germany. The construction of a stone bridge at Creuzburg might have had political and economic considerations, because it was the only secure Werra transition far and wide. Protected by a tower on the bridge and connected by walls of the city, facilitated and secured them the connection between the Landgrave staging points Wartburg and Creuzburg.
Over the centuries, the bridge of the town on the Werra has brought not only benefits, but also disadvantages. About her high arched war droves, inflicted much suffering on the city due to its strategically important location, as is to learn from the previous chapters always rallied. In the war of the Thuringian succession in 1259 and little later in 1295 by King Adolf of Nassau. Also during the thirty years war, moved much wares across the bridge, plagued and plundered the city, and burned them. Fate reached the bridge but only in the second world war. Long since decided, you busted the bridge Easter 1945, who was war to stop the advance of American troops as a result. They had completed a 49 metre-long pontoon bridge over the Werra on 2 April 1945 South of Creuzburg at Spichra, so that the advance continued inexorably into Thuringia.
The destroyed bridge was restored after 1945 in its old lines.
The stone country Grafenkrone placed with the construction of the bridge was ensured while eliminating the defensive Tower 1717 and now resides in the Museum on the Creuzburg. A stone with the coat of arms of the Thuringian Landgraves was destroyed in the explosion and could not be attached.
Increasing road traffic made a new, expectant meet the modern needs of the transport required, 1986 to build concrete bridge over the Werra. Together with the chapel standing on the opposite bank, the old Werra bridge forms a picturesque image. Both are an impressive testimony to medieval architecture.

Here are some information about the blowing up of the bridge on April 1, 1945:

End of March Kreisleiter Köhler from Eisenach appeared together with officers of the Wehrmacht in Creuzburg. On-site, you examined the possibilities of the defence of the important bridge square. The local group leader Karl Kabisch was commissioned to provide the Volkssturm. On 31 March, the soldiers of train of the tank Hunter replacement unit 9 as well as nationals of straggling Wehrmacht units and people storm men, including those from the neighbouring towns, Mt. bridges and the wall climbing dug in. Tank traps were built in the town. The unit comprised a total of approximately 100 men under the leadership of Captain Kladik. Only four Pak, including at least an armored vehicle of the Panzer Regiment 3 in Erfurt, which was previously employed at new farm, in addition to several rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns were available. The historic Werra bridge was equipped with explosive devices. The remains of the temporary positions are still visible on the wall climbing.
In the afternoon, this Easter Sunday brought death and destruction to Creuzburg. The Americans advanced reconnaissance forces in the city and shot from tank guns on the Stadt.Diese call for surrender was answered however by defensive fire from the wall climbing made. The American tip moved back then. Creuzburg was now of Willershausen, Archfeld, Herleshausen road after Frauenborn) and arguably at the height of the ring Gau at Renda driven to Division artillery under heavy fire. In the evening, American tanks entered the city and broke the resistance of a few defenders. Everywhere, fires broke out, and since most of the inhabitants had left the city, they could not be deleted.
In the report of the 4th Division to the battle in Creuzburg remained: "the B companies (CCB) should be in the city work. The tanks were torching buildings and the armoured infantrymen fought down the German resistance, until the city was cleared. The [Werra-] on reaching bridge, she was blown up before their eyes."
In the evening and at night the shelling continued of Creuzburg. U.S. artillery repeatedly intervened in the fighting, and also the German positions on the other side were taken under fire. There now any resistance was extinguished, which destroyed guns, also the tank was shot down. At least 10 German soldiers to the Lieutenant Sweeper were killed here, more casualties were safely recovered by the Americans. A few soldiers could settle in the direction of ütteroda.

in 1747 was the bridge General instandgesetzt by Thuringia land architect G.H.. Crown
