The first Elbe bridge at Riesa for the railway was opened in 1839. This bridge was built on 24 stone pillars with wooden arches in between, 639 m long. The wooden construction proved to be very Totentanz, and so was replaced this 1864-1865 by stone arches, the river opening have been extended to 93 m with a truss. The new bridge was opened in November 1875. Already in February 1876 (19.2.1876 to 22.2.1876), the heavy flood and ice floes in the river Elbe bridge sagged.
As a stopgap, a provisional wooden truss bridge for rail transport was built within 8 months. The rebuilding followed in the years 1876-1878 from three timber-framed arches. 2 Same bridges each for railway and road were directly versions built.
In the last days of the second world war, the bridge was blown up.
a new road bridge was built slightly off in 1956, while the railway bridge rebuilt was replaced in 1966 by a new bridge. This new bridge had only a bow and a trough box as a foreland bridge.
The flooding of the disaster in August 2002, two were damaged foreland bridge (approx. 600 and 1000 metres).

New building starting in 2004:
Scaffolding construction Gemeinhardt Gerüstbau service GmbH
Steel construction of Donges Stahlbau Darmstadt
