In 2008/2009, the bridge underwent a major reconstruction. To accommodate the increasingly larger cruise ships built in Papenburg, the bascule bridge was enlarged. A pier in the river was demolished, allowing the single-leaf bascule bridge to be converted into a double-leaf bridge. During construction work for a new pier, water suddenly flooded the excavation pit, necessitating its removal and causing a construction delay.
