In 1896, an AG was founded with the aim of establishing a railway from Zermatt to the Gornergrat. 3 Million Swiss francs were incorporated as seed capital in the AG. For this amount, the Biel undertook construction company Hague and Greulich to build the railway system including a small power plant.The contract was awarded with the aim to make the opening to the 1.7.1898. 2000 Swiss francs per day for completion delay have been agreed as Malus.
