The bridge was contrary to the usual close-knit truss bridges, as a delicate truss bridge by Gustave Eiffel designed and built. in 1881, a pier was damaged by flood and repaired. Yet in 1890, the bridge cross beam over opening of heavier locomotives were strengthened. But on June 14, 1891, collapsed the bridge under the load of a crowded train and ripped 71 people to death. Weak medium striving in the timber-frame have been identified as the main cause. By this collapse, you recognized the necessity of standardization for the bridge. Already one year later, the first Swiss bridge standard was published. Also validated all railway bridges of Switzerland and several had to be strengthened.
