Information provided by Ralf A. Flemming:
in 1926, the "community of interests to promote the Canalization of the Moselle and Saar" wrote a "memorandum concerning the Canalization of the Moselle and Saar and the exploitation of the water forces dormant in them". In the years between 1938 and 1940, the German Government introduced an expansion draft, which provided for the establishment of a total of 6 Moselle barrage. 1941, Koblenz was begun with the construction of the barrage. By the second world war, in particular due to the now increasingly conducted bombing raids of the allied air force to Koblenz in 1943 and due to construction materials and workers lack (many Koblenz were evacuated in the last years of the war) is interrupted, the construction was completed only resumed in 1948 and 1951. With interruption, the construction period was thus 10 years!

The barrage of Koblenz is also called the "gateway to the Moselle", because it is the first Weir on the Moselle upstream in direction. The exact position of the barrage of Koblenz is specified with "RKM 1.96", the highest navigable water level (HSW) with 8.34 m. The difference in height of the Weir (head) 6.52 m. The barrage of Koblenz is equipped with two locks (170 m x 12 m and 122 m x 12 m). The Weir is a 3-feldriges roller guard, where the Middle roller with a 'fish belly flap"for ice removal and to regulate flow at high tide is equipped. With hydraulic cylinders, the door is tilted or relocated. The hydroelectric power plant on the right bank side consists of three Kaplan pipe turbines with vertical shaft and operator of hydropower plants has an expanding outflow of 380 m³ / s is the "RWE Energie AG".

"At the Moselle barrage the existing gap is used to produce energy. In the wake of the Canalization of the Moselle, two hydroelectric power plants were erected between Koblenz and trier ten and in the german Luxembourg Prajzska, since eco-friendly electricity. In a later phase of development, five more power plants originated in France. The quantity of water, but also the head at each storage level to the one depends for the performance of the individual power plants. The fast-flowing waters put the turbine in motion and this rotation creates electricity in the generator."

Arrangement of the Regierungsbezirk Koblenz v. 3 July 1980 the area the Moselle barrage was declared Koblenz to Schongau district fish, i.e., that "any kind of fishing" is prohibited. On the right bank of the River, a "fish pass" with serious defects that exist (fish ski lift, type: pool pass at the right bank under the access to the power station into the underwater of the power plant), on the basis of a study (Engineering Office Dr. Gebler, Walzbachtal v. February 2007) with regard to the Durchgängigkeitsklasse "largely undurchgängig, the ascent only for single copies is possible." Currently only recommendations exist for a functional fish descent system! A natural solution (Rau channel pool pass) is recommended with regard to the planning of a "fish rise Koblenz".

Com. notice (AZ: 2-231.2-AnlMo/8 III) the shipping authority Koblenz (national negotiated with public participation in competition) the existing Weir footbridge shall be replaced by a new building. Job duration: 5 months. Deadline for requests to participate: 15.03.2007. The invitation to tender was extended to April 13, 2007.

Because its functionality is not impaired, is suspected, that the renewal of the Weir bridge have become unsightly in the meantime is performed aiming the optical appreciation of the barrage with regard to the annual 2011 in Koblenz BUGA (Federal horticultural show).
