The 690.5 m long bridge structure has 12 spans. In the river area, the structure consists of a 420.5 m long section with a composite steel superstructure and four spans. In the eastern approach area, there is a 270 m long segment with a prestressed concrete superstructure and eight spans. The two superstructures are monolithically and rigidly connected. The continuous beam is the structural system in the longitudinal direction.
The composite steel superstructure has a trapezoidal single-cell box girder cross-section. The spans are 84.5 m in the western end span, 144.0 m in the main span over the shipping channel, and 120.0 m and 62.0 m in the following spans. The adjoining prestressed concrete bridge has a slab girder cross-section and connects with a span of 42.0 m. The following six spans have a span of 35.0 m, and the eastern end span has a span of 28.0 m.
A striking structural element of the single-span bridge is the pier on the right bank of the river. This is the longitudinal fixed point of the structure and consists of two V-shaped composite steel columns, which are monolithically connected to the composite steel box girder of the superstructure and form the shape of an "eye".
The columns of the pier are supported at the bottom by concrete hinges. These are constructed with high-strength, self-compacting concrete of strength class C55/67. Since this construction method using high-strength, self-compacting concrete is being used for the first time in Germany, extensive investigations, including a 1:1 scale test specimen, were carried out regarding the feasibility of the concrete joints.
