It was built according to a design of by engineer Robert Maillart and belongs to his early work. The building itself was built in 1899 by the city architect Gustav Gull. Since around 1900 it was still not common to show naked concrete bridges, the bridge with Hau stones of granite and sandstone is covered. Bronze lions, designed by the sculptor Urs Eggenschwyler stand on four cornerstones.
