The structure was built in 1965 as part of the elimination of level crossings. It incorporates "Sigma oval" type prestressing tendons, which are susceptible to sudden failure. Therefore, the City of Cologne is currently planning a complete demolition and reconstruction of the bridge. Current plans call for the span over the railway tracks to be constructed as a tied-arch bridge.
