Part of the Passetto di Borgo. Source Wikipedia: The Passetto di Borgo is an approximately 800-meter-long medieval escape tunnel leading from the Vatican to Castel Sant'Angelo. It was built in 1277 by Pope Nicholas III. Appearing as an ordinary wall on the outside, the tunnel conceals a hidden passageway that, among others, helped Popes Clement VII (during the Sack of Rome) and Pius VII (from Napoleon) escape from the Vatican to the formidable Castel Sant'Angelo.
