280 m long pedestrian bridge connecting Marina Center with Marina South (Marina Bay).
The helix is made of approximately 650 tons of stainless steel; approximately 1,000 tons of steel were used as temporary support to achieve the helix shape.
Officially opened on April 24, 2010; opened to traffic on July 18, 2010.
In close proximity to the Benjamin Sheares Bridge and the Bayfront Bridge.
The bridge was designed by an international team.
Pairs of colored letters C (for cytosine) and G (for guanine), as well as A (for adenine) and T (for thymine) on the bridge represent the four bases of DNA.
The architectural consortium consisted of an international team of architects from Australia and a local architectural firm (Architects 61). The responsible engineer was Tristram Carfrae of Arup. The canopies made of Fritte glass and perforated sheet metal along the inner spiral provide shade for pedestrians during hot summer days. The bridge has four strategically located viewing platforms offering stunning views of the Singapore skyline and events in Marina Bay. At night, the bridge is illuminated by a series of lights designed to highlight the double helix structure and create a unique visual experience for visitors. The structure won the "World's Best Transportation Building" award at the World Architecture Festival Awards in the same year it opened.
