The Kunitz House Bridge, also known as the Kunitz Wooden House Bridge, is a bridge over the Saale River near Jena. It existed from 1832 to 1945 and was rebuilt in 2012.
Until 1832, Kunitz could only be reached by crossing the Saale River by ferry, but ferry accidents frequently resulted in fatalities. For this reason, it was decided in 1829 to build a bridge. Once the necessary funds were available, the foundation stone was laid on February 22, 1832, and a 35-meter-long covered wooden bridge was erected.[1] This bridge was destroyed by the Wehrmacht in the final weeks of the war in 1945.
The historic wooden house bridge is currently being rebuilt (September 2012) on the piers of a temporary bridge that served as a replacement for the Kunitz road bridge during its renovation in 2011. The Hausbrücke (House Bridge) is the only bridge spanning the Saale River.[2]
Every year on October 3rd, German Unity Day, the Kunitz Bridge and Monument Association organizes the Bridge Festival.
The rebuilt Hausbrücke was inaugurated in November 2012. (Source: Wikipedia)
Kunitz was incorporated into Jena on July 1, 1994.
