With the construction of the bridge was started on 17 November 1966. After almost four years of construction it was opened on June 15, 1970, first only for pedestrians and cyclists.

Twelve months later, on June 29, 1971, decided to baptize the building the name Werder bridge the Bremen building deputation.

The bridge for general traffic was released on September 25, 1971.

Since June 2007, the bridge was renovated extensively. Between February and August 2008, the bridge for the traffic was blocked and usable only on a bus shuttle service. The cost for the renovation work amounted to 4.5 million euros.

On August 30, 2008, the bridge was reopened for traffic.
