The bridge was built for a connecting railway to the Rhenania gravel pit lake. The present-day Römersee (Roman Lake) was created in the early 1920s, and the gravel was transported via this connecting railway to the nearby port railway.
The Römersee in its current form came into being as part of the redesign of the green belt between 1926 and 1928, when an overgrown stream in the "Johansenaue" area was transformed into a park and recreational landscape.
