a fortified dam used today as a road bridge, built by Gian Galeazzo Visconti

Wikipedia:
History
The Ponte Visconteo was 1393-1395 by the Duke of Milan Gian Galeazzo Visconti built. Construction gave it the fortress Master Builder Dominico da Firenze. The dam should divert the waters of the Mincio river and thus deprive the water of Mantova. It was hoped that Mantua easier to take is without its moat, which was fed by the Mincio river. Technical complications and historical events prevented however that this plan of execution arrived. Only for 10 years was the system of strategic importance, then she was exposed to the decline.
Changes
An iron bridge in the plant was used in the 1920s, which allows the crossing of the Mincio river traffic until today. The Strada Provinciale 3 runs directly on the medieval building.
Although some restoration work have been made lately, the condition is still critical. 2007, the Ponte Visconteo recorded in the list of 100 endangered monuments of the World Monuments Fund (WMF).
