designed by Antonio da Ponte--

Information of Klaus Bernhardt.
Here a wooden bascule bridge was previously.
Designs were submitted for the construction of a new bridge from Michelangelo, Palladio and da Ponte. Antonio da Ponte had rebuilt after a fire in the Doge's Palace and has received the order, although he was already 75 years old. The abutments are founded on each 6000 Alder stems. Rumors about lack of stability resulted in the interruption of the construction. Opinion, however, confirmed the security. Soon after its completion, the bridge survived an earthquake without damage. The bridge allowed the passage of great gondolas of splendour of and remains to this day.
