The Bettrather Straße bridge spans the artificial cutting of the railway line between Krefeld and Rheydt, which opened in 1877. However, the section along what is now the B57 federal highway between Mönchengladbach-Bökel in the north and Mönchengladbach-Speick in the south was closed as early as 1909 under the then mayor, Hermann Piecq, and replaced by a bypass running further west and north. Along the former railway line, one of the city's most magnificent and spacious streets of the time, the Hermann-Piecq-Anlage, was created. The railway cutting was initially about 6 meters lower than it is today. In 1954, the bridge underwent extensive reconstruction and repair. As part of this project, the bridge was widened and a shotcrete shell was applied to the masonry. The pedestrian walkways were cantilevered using steel girders and a reinforced concrete deck. Furthermore, the brickwork was grouted with cement grout. Demolition and replacement construction is planned for 2025. Due to various delays, the demolition has been postponed to March 2026. The closure for the demolition is scheduled from March 5th to March 26th, 2026.
