The city of Herne is planning the construction of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Rhine-Herne Canal (RHK) in the Horsthausen district. Starting from the canal bank path, extending south from "Hoverskamp," the route of the new structure connects to this path almost perpendicularly. The straight route, running alongside the Waterways and Shipping Administration's (WSV) depot, will cross the RHK via a straight steel arch bridge from the southern ramp. On the northern bank, the bridge will also span the WSV's service road and terminate at the northern abutment. Here, the route curves eastward and connects to the existing path network via an earth ramp. The southern connection to the bridge will be made by an earth embankment. To the north, cuts into the existing embankment will be necessary. The bridge is planned as a network arch bridge with an airtight welded hollow box girder, constructed of steel. A unique feature is that the arch is positioned on one side next to the box girder and inclined outwards by approximately 15° to the bridge axis. Pre-assembly of the superstructure takes place on a nearby municipal site. From there, the superstructure will be floated into its final position over the Rhine-Herne Canal. A smart surface heating system integrated into the RHD (Rhine-Herne Canal) deck will keep the superstructure free of snow and ice in winter. The bridge is illuminated by LED lighting integrated into the railing, which illuminates the bridge deck. A reinforced concrete staircase will create a recreational area along the canal. The staircase has an approximately quarter-circle geometry and consists of a staircase and seating steps. The straight staircase leads from the northern abutment to the lower service road of the Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV). The centrally located railing of the staircase, like the railing on the bridge, will feature integrated lighting in the handrail. Both abutments and the staircase are founded on deep, large-diameter bored piles. The drainage of the bridge, stair, and walkway surfaces is achieved via 20 infiltration wells, each with a diameter of 120 cm, which discharge the water into deeper soil layers. Length of the traffic facility: 294.7 m; Length of the bridge: 98.5 m; Bridge width between handrails: 4.0 m; Bridge area: approx. 394 m²; Height above canal: > 7.875 m
Tonnage of steel: approx. 280 t (S355)
Superstructure: single-span, straight steel box girder (tightly welded) as a network arch bridge with an inclined arch arranged laterally to the superstructure on one side. Abutments,
Staircase and foundation components: approx. 540 m³ reinforced concrete of strength class C 30/37
Foundation: deep foundation with approx. 460 m
bored piles, diameter 1.20 m. Bearings:
6 units (4 spherical bearings, 2 horizontal restraints).
Transition structures: approx. 13 m of sheet pile construction.
Waterproofing, pavement: approx. 450 m² of resin-bonded thin pavement with integrated electric heating elements (pavement thickness 12 mm).
Railings: approx. 270 m of railings as a special construction (mostly (with handrail lighting)
Earthworks: approx. 3700 m³ excavation; approx. 3500 m³ soil placement
Path construction: approx. 700 m²
Path construction in asphalt, approx. 100 m² water-bound surface
Other: Vibration dampers as a spring-mass system,
Covering on the seating steps, 20 infiltration wells
