The Alsen Bridge, located along Kohlhasenbrücke Strasse in Berlin-Zehlendorf, was built in 1906 by the Waterways Administration during the construction of the Prinz-Friedrich-Leopold Canal.
To accommodate the increased traffic volume following German reunification, the old bridge, which operated with only one lane and traffic lights as the only connection to the Steinstücken district and further on to Potsdam, was dismantled and replaced with a new bridge.
The appearance of the new bridge was adapted to that of the old one and supplemented to meet modern requirements. The cornice and railing designs were retained from the old bridge. The spans of the old bridge were retained, as the existing and intact piers could be reused.
The roadway is now 7.00 m wide. The sidewalks, including cycle lanes and safety lanes, are each 4.10 m wide. The bridge deck was transported in six individual sections (2 x 18.0 m, each weighing 33.5 t, and 4 x 12.0 m, each weighing 21.0 t) with a total weight of 151.0 t on low-loaders from the workshop in Frankfurt/Oder to the construction site and assembled using two cranes in early November 1996. The cantilever arm of the eastern footpath was installed later, after the individual deck sections had been assembled, without disrupting traffic.
