The bridge was renovated in 2019. A rather unsightly steel railing was added to provide additional security for the old, non-standard railing. From an email by Siegbert Baumunk: The Gifhorn City Administration - Civil Engineering Department - commissioned this "restoration" for €200,000. The steel pipe inner railing was installed for safety reasons, as the city did not want to be held liable for any accidents caused by falling from the bridge. The bridge was inaugurated just last week and briefly featured in the newspaper with photos that weren't very informative. Those who have already seen the bridge in person are outraged by this design and defacement and would have preferred to see the bridge gradually decay rather than this restoration. I am currently collecting opinions on the restoration of the bridge and would be grateful for your feedback.
