The old Rhine bridge near Breisach, with a total length of 328 m, had three main spans of 72 m, as well as two flood spans of 28 m on each bank. The bridge superstructure consisted of iron, parallel-chord truss structures with a roadway below. The truss girders were spaced 4.65 m apart and had a vertical spacing of 7.2 m at the main spans and 3.0 m at the secondary spans. Sinkholes were used for the foundations of the piers. The maximum foundation depth was 20 m below the mean water level. The bridge was blown up at the end of World War II.
