During the renovation of the Mutterer Tunnel and the Mutterer Bridge in 2009, it became apparent that more extensive work would be necessary to preserve them under the stresses caused by low-floor vehicles. Therefore, in 2014, planning began for a new bridge, which branches off between Nockhofweg and the tunnel and rejoins the line after the existing Mutterer Bridge.[12][13] The tender “New Construction Mutterer Bridge” – specifically the “Construction of a composite bridge structure with two reinforced concrete columns, total length approx. 153 m, height above ground approx. 42 m” – The contract was awarded to Porr in October 2016.[14] For the construction of the bridge, a siding for the construction train was needed at the Nockhofweg stop, and therefore the stop was upgraded to a station with a passing loop in July 2015.[15] Construction of the bridge began at the end of October 2016. By the end of May 2017, the piers and abutments had been erected; in June, the steel structure of the superstructure was lifted into place. The new construction changes the route of the Stubai Valley Railway. The track is straightened and shortened in this section. Scheduled service across the new Mutterer Bridge is expected to begin in mid-November 2017. As the old bridge is a listed building, it will be adapted for hikers and cyclists.
