On the third weekend of June 2011, the bridge on State Road 1 (Dinslakener Straße) over the Wesel-Datteln Canal between Krudenburg and Hönxe was demolished. The bridge had been closed between March and June 2011 because it contained a type of steel dating from the 1960s, which, according to recent findings, can break spontaneously and without warning, thus posing a risk of collapse. To eliminate any safety risk, the bridge was demolished.
brings
The bridge was a prestressed concrete bridge built in 1962.
Some production batches of the prestressing steel ("Sigma steel") used in the concrete at that time are now classified as susceptible to stress corrosion cracking. This means that the prestressing steel can suddenly break under tensile stress in a corrosive environment. ```
