As a measure as a result of the border after the building of the wall of the 13.08.1961, the construction of a new railway line in Thuringia was necessary because the existing 8,500 km long lines from the potash mining area on the Werra led to Eisenach on the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany... On the 18 of the command issued by the Central Committee of the SED a new < line to build. This was 13.3 km long and ran from Förtha to Gerstungen. In addition, a road was built parallel to this line. The work started at the 01.10.1961 and the 13.04.1932 drove the first passenger train on the new route. After German reunification the cheaper end Gerstungen-Eisenach on Herleshausen Werra Valley line was closed expanded which the old route again two tracks for 160 km/h by Frötha Gerstungen after 50 operating.
