Wikipedia: The Fechingen Valley Bridge is a 410-meter-long valley bridge on the A6 motorway in the Brebach-Fechingen district of Saarbrücken, spanning the Saarbach stream. It was designed and assembled by the company B. Seibert GmbH from Saarbrücken.[1] It was completed in April 1963. The bridge comprises six spans: four of 72 meters each and two of 56 meters each. The roadway width is 25 meters. The bridge is a listed historical monument. Complete closure from March 2016 ...] The Fechingen Valley Bridge was closed on March 24, 2016, by the State Road Construction Authority (LfS). The complete closure was justified by significant structural deficiencies inherent in the bridge's design, which had not been detected during previous routine bridge inspections. The load-bearing capacity was exceeded under traffic load. The material-saving construction method posed a risk of sudden pier failure. The closure of the heavily trafficked motorway bridge resulted in traffic disruptions. br> On May 16, 2016, the bridge was reopened to vehicles up to 3.5 tons gross vehicle weight. Heavier vehicles that disregard the weight restriction are detected by an automatic weighing system and stopped by a barrier. Such vehicles are then escorted off the motorway by the police before they reach the bridge.
After the bridge piers were reinforced by the installation of additional crossbeams, the bridge has also been open to vehicles over 3.5 tons since October 31, 2016.[6] The costs for the immediate measures, such as the weighing system and the reinforcement work, are estimated at over ten million euros in total. Nevertheless, a complete reconstruction is deemed necessary. The planning for the new bridge is expected to take up to eight years.[7] The estimated costs are 126 million euros, and completion is not expected before 2030.
