The so-called multi-way bridge (three paths in a T-shape) was the target for the first atomic bomb drop in 1945 because it was a clearly visible landmark. The bridge was severely damaged in the attack but was repaired after World War II and remained in use for approximately 40 more years. A new bridge was built as a replica in 1984.
