On April 8, 1945, the bridge was blown up by Wehrmacht soldiers retreating from American troops; only the easternmost of the original three arches remained. The bridge was planned at the beginning of the 20th century as part of a transport link between the municipality of Much and the city of Siegburg – initially as a railway line. After the First World War, this project was revived – this time, however, as a road connection, the construction of which, begun in 1925, was also intended as a structural development measure to alleviate unemployment in the region.
