City Council Proposal 2021/0395:
The bridge structure W 004 Hammerweg, located in the Schlebusch district, serves as access and development for the Freudenthaler Sensenhammer residential and commercial area. The bridge spans the Dhünn River at an oblique angle (50 degrees). It lies within the Dhünn Flora and Fauna Habitat (FFH protected area). A landscape conservation area and a nature reserve are directly adjacent (Annex 1). The bridge was constructed of reinforced concrete in 1927/1928. Its calculated service life of 80 years has been exceeded by 12 years.
In 2016, an engineering firm conducted a structural recalculation of the bridge based on a main inspection and the damage identified during that inspection, in order to verify its load-bearing capacity. The investigation led to the following findings:
In 1969, due to existing damage (corrosion on the reinforcement and concrete damage), the concrete cover for the reinforcing steel was increased. Since then, the progression of the damage can no longer be adequately monitored due to the increased concrete cover. The recalculation concluded that a load of 30 tons on the bridge can still be permitted. However, it was strongly recommended that a new building be planned by 2021, as further progression of the damage could lead to restrictions on the structure's use (such as a reduction in the permissible load). A complete closure would then also be a possibility.
The planning for the new building is to be completed in 2021 so that construction can begin in 2022.
